The I.L.I and Spioenkop - by: Rory

I have a pair to Alexander Laing who served with the Imperial Light Infantry in the early days of the Natal campaign before earning his KSA with Kitchener's Fighting Scouts.

I know it's a difficult one... but I would like to know if there is a record (diary) etc. anywhere which would place various companies in the heat of the action at Spioenkop? Going on what I think is a reference to Laing's company on the attached attestation form; I am predisposed to think that he was with "E" Company.

Am I wrong in assuming this and would "E" Company have been "atop" the "Kop"?

Regards

Rory

Soldiers who returned to die - by: BereniceUK

How can we get to see a copy of this return? Who would we apply to? Bureaucracy being what it is, surely this will still be kept somewhere.

"A Parliamentary return has been issued stating the number of sailors and soldiers, giving their names and description, who have been invalided home since the commencement of the South African campaign and have died from wounds or disease. As regards the Navy, only one leading seaman is returned as having died from tubercle of the lungs due to exposure during the siege of Ladysmith. The number of soldiers who have died is returned at 293, and of these the deaths of 23 were directly due to wounds received during the course of the war. The deaths resulting from enteric fever amounted to 77."

"Hundreds of spectators were on Saturday afternoon assembled along the principal streets of the town, on the occasion of the funeral of Private John Francis Grourke, of the 1st South Staffordshire Regiment, who had died at the house of his parents in Bolebridge street, on the previous Wednesday. The deceased had been in South Africa during the war, and was wounded at Thabanchu, and also by a shell at Winburg. He had likewise suffered from enteric fever, and had been invalided to Netley Hospital, from which he was discharged some weeks ago and came home to Tamworth. Subsequently he caught a chill, from the effects of which he died at the age of 24 years. The authorities at Whittington Barracks decided to give the funeral military honours."

1683 Pte. T. Brown Scots Rifles, PoW Blood River Poort 17/9/1901 - by: azyeoman

Here's another Boer War PoW pair for an interesting battle.QSA with TH, OFS, RL, Trans, LN and KSA with SA01 & SA02 clasps officially named to: 1683 Pte. T. Brown Scot Rifles

Thomas Brown was a Wheelwright from Glasgow, he attested on 3rd September 1885 aged 19. During the Boer war, he served with 24th mounted infantry ( Major Gough's unit) Scottish Rifles. He was captured on the 17th September 1901 at Blood River Poort. He was released in 1902 and discharged on 11th August, after which he returned home and worked as a labourer.  Brown reenlisted in the Scottish Rifles on 17th August 1914 aged 48.

History and battle
In August 1901, the Boer leaders determined to send forces south into Natal and the Cape Colony hoping to cause an uprising in the Dutch-majority Cape Colony or at least to gain recruits for their armies. Accordingly, a commando under Botha moved southeast toward Natal while another commando under Jan Smuts raided south into the Cape Colony.British Intelligence detected the plan, but Botha evaded the British intercepting columns. The cold spring rains made the march especially difficult for the Boers' horses. On 14 September, Botha let his 1,000-man commando camp near Utrecht to permit the horses to recover. Meanwhile, Gough's 24th Mounted Infantry (MI) made a 500-mile (800 km) move by train from Kroonstad in the Orange Free State to Dundee in Natal. Gough received intelligence that Botha and 700 Boers were nearby.Gough led his MI from Dundee to De Jaeger's Drift, a ford on the Buffalo River. Dismissing the intelligence report as exaggerated, he led three companies on a reconnaissance across the river. Through his field glasses, he spotted 300 Boers who dismounted at a farm near Blood River Poort. Leaving his colleague Lieutenant-Colonel H. K. Stewart with 450 MI in the rear, Gough moved forward into a plain in the early afternoon, planning to surprise the Boers at the farm. Unknown to Gough, Botha was moving around his right flank with 700 men.Botha's mounted attack completely swamped Gough's outnumbered force. Lieutenant Llewellyn Price-Davies of the King's Royal Rifle Corps won the Victoria Cross for valiantly defending the field guns. Gough was captured, escaped, captured again and finally escaped on foot in the darkness. On the British side, four officers and 19 other ranks were killed or mortally wounded, 2 officers and 19 men wounded, and 6 officers and 235 men captured. According to Boer policy, the captured were stripped of their weapons and any useful gear, and most of their clothing, and were allowed to walk to the nearest British post. The Boers seized two field guns, 180 rifles and a large quantity of small arms ammunition. The 200 captured horses turned out to be in poor condition and of little use to the raiders. Boer losses were light.Botha was unable to exploit his victory because he found all the crossings of the Buffalo River blocked by the British. The Boers moved to the southeast, hoping to find a place to cross into Natal. On the Zululand border, Botha attacked a British camp named Fort Itala, believing it to be weakly defended. Instead, the Boers received a bloody nose when 56 of their men were killed or wounded. When Botha realized that British forces were approaching in overwhelming strength, he turned back into the Transvaal, his raid a failure.

I am hoping that I can help a friend in South Africa make contact with the current owner of his Great Grandfather's QSA medal.

We are looking for the owner of this medal purchased from Baldwin of London in 2009:

QSA Medal with three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1901, awarded to 11100 Pte J Rennie 13th Coy, 46th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry.

Any help with this search would be much appreciated.

djb wrote: The casualty rolls list 224 men who died at sea. However it is not usually listed in which direction they were travelling.

Armed with the date of demise and the shipping records, it would be possible to identify the direction of travel.

My Grandfather saw action in the Boer War with the Scandinavians from 1899 - 1902 and was issued with a service medal which included his stint at Maggersfontein.
It has/was in our family possession until the death of my brother and then mysteriously disappeared and I suspect was stolen.
Does anybody know how this medal found it's way into a collectors hands, I really would appreciate any assistance regarding this medal.
My Grandfathers name was : JOHANNES REINIERUS BESSELING

14 June 1900: Sand River
On 13 June the newly-appointed Gen(Rev) Paul Roux with the Senekal Commando, another 200 men of the Ladybrand
Commando, Capt John Hassell with his American Scouts,  two pom-poms and a field gun advanced towardsthe British post at Virginia to destroy the important railway bridge over the
Sand River. Lt Col Capper, RE, in command of 730 men (mainly Railway Pioneer
Regiment and Royal Lancaster Militia), had been warned of the impending Boer
action by a “hensopper” and the British positions on both banks of the river
had been well entrenched.
Early on the 14th theBoers advanced, chiefly under cover of dongas and scrub on the east and west
and initially wasted time and ammunition firing on empty tents left by Capper
when he shifted camp. Although the nature of the ground gave them excellent
cover and a potential advantage, the Boers retreated by noon, after some hours
fighting, when a body of some 170 Yeomanry appeared on the scene.

Louis Irving Seymour was born inWhitney Point, New York, USA in 1860 and came to South Africa in 1889 to work
as Mechanical Engineer with De Beers in Kimberley. In 1896 he was appointed
Chief Mechanical Engineer to Rand Mines and other companies in the Eckstein
Group.
He left Johannesburg via DelagoaBay on 14 October 1899. In Cape Town he was instrumental in the formation of
the Railway Pioneer Regiment, recruited mainly from engineers and mechanics of
all kinds from the Rand.

Major Seymour was killed in the 14June action. Lt Col Capper, in his despatch of 15 June 1900 (LG 8 Feb 1901,
p904), stated:
“I especially deplore the death of Major Seymour, whoseloss will not only be felt by us as a regiment, but by the whole of South
Africa. He was killed while advancing with the extended line through the bush,
to clear out the snipers.”

His memorial stone stands in thesmall military cemetery near the old railway station at Virginia.
In July 1900 his friends andcolleagues decided to establish a technical library in his memory. A sum of £11
477 was collected and the Seymour Memorial Library was opened in 1905. It is
now one of the special libraries falling under the Johannesburg Public Library.

On Wednesday in last week Mr. R. J. Griffiths, eldest son of Mr. R. Griffiths, 59, North-parade, Aberystwyth, and formerly a compositor at the Merthyr Times Office, left Aberystwyth for Cape Colony, South Africa. Mr. Griffiths was accompanied by Mr. David Jones, a young Aberystwyth draper. The two emigrants left Southampton on Saturday by the Methven Castle.

The Aberystwyth Observer, Thursday 29th March 1900

DEATH OF MR. DICK GRIFFITHS.
We have to announce the death of Mr R. J. Griffiths, eldest son of Mrs Griffiths, butcher, North parade, which occurred on Thursday morning. He was thirty-three years of age. Apprenticed as a compositor, he went out to South Africa, and joined the mounted police, with whom he served in the Matabele war. He also served under General Plumer in the Boer War, and was with him in his attempt to relieve Mafeking from the north. He afterwards served under other commanders, and at the close of the war came home for some months, but returned again to South Africa. Being invalided, he came home in the early summer a mere shadow of his former self. Everything was done to restore him to health, but the end came on Thursday morning. The remains were interred on Monday morning, at the cemetery, the Rev N. Thomas, R.D., officiating. Dick Griffiths was of a sociable temperament, and had many friends.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE ABERYSTWYTH OBSERVER.
Dear Sir, - I have just read with the feelings of deepest sympathy of the death of Mr R. J. Griffiths, one of the young men whose history Aberystwyth ought to be proud of. So with your kind permission I will through the medium of your paper relate a little of that history. Some years ago he left Aberystwyth with another friend, a member of the great Prodigal band who have at different times left Aberystwyth to gain fame and fortune, or remain in obscurity and be buried to all and sundry, except perhaps their relations.Dick Griffiths was well known in South Africa, especially among the Welsh portion of the colonists, and to me he was an intimate friend, having served under me in that country. He was a capital soldier and a good all round man. He served under Plumer, French, and other distinguished Generals. He fought in the Matabele and Mashona wars, and saw service in Griqualand and Pondoland, and was almost through the whole of the Boer War, being under Plumer at the relief of Mafeking. The illness which has at last carried him off, and from which he has suffered for years, was contracted on the field.Among his many good qualities, which I think only those most intimately acquainted with him knew of was his wit and good humour, and many an hour have I passed in his company in far-away South Africa listening to his many yarns of home and abroad. One story told of him which I may be pardoned for introducing here, was as follows:Dick was serving under Plumer in Matabeleland, and during the different treks the column would often get far ahead of the Commisseriat Waggon, and on such occasions food was a thing to be dreamt of only.Orders had been issued that looting, especially for food, would be severely punished. One evening at the end of a trek a few boon companions, who had spotted a goat browsing quietly near a kraal, informed Dick that his help was wanted to skin the said goat, as they had captured it, and that the same animal was hanging in a tent head downwards ready for the knife. Dick proceeded to render the required assistance at once, and in the midst of the operations who should stroll into the tent but Colonel Plumer. Everyone sprang to attention, and then the Colonel said - "What is the meaning of this?"Dick saluted, and replied - "It is a goat, sir, that lost its way. Where shall I send the kidneys, sir?" Colonel Plumer, taking a lenient view of the situation, and being convulsed with laughter at the readyt reply, retired. This letter will, I dare say, be published after the remains of our friend have been laid to rest, but I sincerely trust that local Volunteers will have seen their way to escort the remains and help to pay a tribute of respect to one who has served Queen, King and Country with an unsullied record. He was a firm friend, and one of the pluckiest men it has ever been my pleasure to meet. Pleasant recollections of his memory will live for a long time in the minds and hearts of his many friends at home and abroad.
                                                                                                  I am, sir,
                                                                                                       ANOTHER PRODIGAL.
The Aberystwyth Observer, Thursday 1st December 1904

The death took place on Thursday morning of Mr. R. J. Griffiths, eldest son of the late Mr. Griffiths, 59, North-parade. He served his apprenticeship as compositor and for some time followed his trade, and was engaged at one of the printing offices in Bulawayo. He afterwards joined the Cape Police with whom he went through the Matabele War in 1896. He was also in the South African War, being a member of the Rhodesian Protectorate Regiment under General Plumer. At the end of the war he was invalided home suffering from fever, but returned to South Africa and spent some time in hospital but came home in June last. He was only 33 years of age.

I have been looking into posting images to the site this morning and it seems to work for me.

I did notice last weekend during the upgrade that some images were appeared as a large block of characters.

If you are having problems posting images, can you let me know please?  If you would be good of you could email any problematic images to me at david.biggins [at] angloboerwar, com so that I can investigate further.

QSAs with the clasp Wepener - by: djb

The purpose of this thread is for QSAs with the clasp Wepener.

From my research so far, there are some 2,050 Wepener clasps issued Due to the subdsequent movement of troops between units, there are a wide range of primarily South African units to which the clasp was ultimately issues.

This table shows the approximate number of clasps issue by unit.

Cape Mounted Rifles - 513
2nd Brabant's Horse - 473
Kaffrarian Rifles - 422
1st Brabant's Horse - 392
Royal Scots - 83
Driscoll's Scouts - 78
South African Constabulary - 25
Royal Engineers - 11
Prince of Wales Light Horse - 9
KFS, 2nd - 8
Scottish Horse, 1st Battalion - 7
Prince Alfred’s Own Volunteer Guard - 5
Johannesburg Mounted Rifles - 3
Royal Garrison Artillery - 3
Imperial Light Horse, 2nd Battalion - 2
Scottish Horse, 2nd Battalion - 2
Imperial Light Horse, 1st Battalion 1
Cape Medical Staff Corps - 1
Lancashire Fusiliers 1
7th Hussars 1

A good example is the group to C L Wells, of the JMR. Biography from DNW.

Charles Lionell Wells was present at Wepener as a Trooper in the Cape Mounted Rifles and was subsequently appointed to a commission in the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles. He was dangerously wounded near Driefontein on 1 May 1901 and mentioned in despatches London Gazette 3 December 1901, ‘For dash and judgement in attack on position at Waterval on 10th September, 1901’.

Wells received a commission in the Regular Army as Second Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, on 28 August 1902, becoming Lieutenant on 6 April 1903. He was attached to the North Nigeria Regiment and took part in the Kano-Sokoto campaign, January-July 1903, and was mentioned in despatches for his part in the action at Kotorokoshi which resulted in the award of the Victoria Cross to Lieutenant Wallace Wright, The Queen’s Regiment. The London Gazette of 31 July 1903 reported: ‘Lieut. W. D. Wright, with Lieut. C. L. Wells and 45 men of the Mounted Infantry left on the 24th, reaching Korokoshi on the 25th. He there came into contact with and was charged by the advance party of the enemy coming down the road from Kaura but routed them with the loss of 40 killed and numerous prisoners. Continuing his advance towards Rawia he was riding up to a Chief who apparently wished to surrender, when he was suddenly charged from an ambuscade by about 30 horsemen, who broke through his men but were repulsed with a loss of 5 killed. Lieut. Wright was informed by his scouts at 8 a.m. that the enemy were advancing in force. He immediately formed square round his horsesheld by his carriers and prisoners. The enemy in great numbers charged the square repeatedly for two hours. At 10 a.m. the enemy drew off leaving 65 horsemen dead within 30 yards of the square, 11 of them being recognised as principal chiefs of Kano... Lieut. Wright makes special mention of the assistance he received from Lieut. C. L. Wells, 3rd Hampshire Regiment, who between enemy charges, was employed in cutting down thorn bushes to form a zariba outside the square.’

Another member of the JMR to receive the clasp was Capt N Johnston. He had served as a Lieutenant in the Kaffrarian Rifles and Brabant’s Horse.

One of the collecting themes of old was single clasp QSAs. My brother and I used to own a single clasp QSA with Wepener but this was because the other clasps were missing rather than it being a single issue.

Wilfred David Finlayson joined Brabant’s Horse in November 1899 having seen previous service with the Shanghai Volunteers. He was present with his regiment at Wepener, his discharge papers, dated 5 November 1901 noting that all his equipment and clothing was lost Wepener. At the time of his discharge he held the rank of Sergeant Major but shortly afterwards joined the Kimberley Light Horse at Lieutenant. With that regiment it would appear he was entitled to three additional clasps, Cape Colony, Transvaal and Wittebergen. He is also entitled to the KSA medal.

David
