QSA/KSA recipients with service on St Helena - by: Henk Loots

Hi
One often find DTD's and/or ABO's to Boer PoW's held on St Helena.
QSA/KSA's to men who did duty there are less common, However, there must be more than a few examples in Forumites' collections and I propose a topic as such.
To start the ball rolling :

Spink was awarded the QSA with bar "Cape Colony" from a roll headed "Civilian Staff St Helena", signed on the island on 6 January 1903. The SA'02 bar was authorised on a roll headed "Attd. R.A.M.Corps", dated 29 April 1903 and signed at the War Office.
It would be interesting to know whether he attended to Boer and Brit ..
Henk

PS We are leaving tomorrow for some 3 weeks in Namibia, camping and birding.
I hope there will be a lot to see on the Forum after our return!

Soldiers who died en route to South Africa - were they entitled to a QSA? - by: BereniceUK

At what point did soldiers who died become eligible for a medal? Below are two examples I've come across of soldiers dying before reaching South Africa - would their families have later received Queen's South Africa medals in the names of the deceased men?

"Private Moffat, of the Royal Army Medical Corps, committed suicide at Aldershot on Monday.....He was under orders for Africa."

"After leaving Teneriffe a shadow was cast over the ship, for on March 2nd one of the Yorkshires, a native of Scarborough, died at three a.m., and was buried at ten the same morning. Only the members of his own company were allowed at the funeral, which lasted about five minutes. All the other companies had to fall in on their own decks, and stand at attention while the service was on. I may mention that we crossed the equator the same day."

Considerable Long-Shot - Boer War Veteran? - by: Buffnut453

Hi Folks,

I'm a complete newbie here so I beg your indulgence. Going through some old family photos I stumbled across this one dating from WW1 but I believe the soldier is wearing a Queen's South Africa Medal. The photo was taken in St.Helens, Lancashire, and he's possibly a Lancs Fusilier. Sadly, I don't know who he is.

Are there any resources out there that might help me narrow down the options to help identify him? I'm guessing he's either a relative or perhaps a neighbor. I'd love to identify him although I realize it's a very, VERY long shot.

Any and all suggestions would be most welcome.

Many thanks,
Mark

Hello

When the QSA was issued did it include the clasps that the receipient was entitled to, or were the clasps sent at a later date for a jeweller to affix to the QSA ?

Thank you, WilloW

At Holy Trinity Church, West Hendred, Oxfordshire.

In the churchyard I found a second memorial for Alder. There are no other inscriptions on the stone, so it's definitely a memorial.

Good Day. I am a new member from South Africa. What was the A.O.D? A medal impressed to R.P. Williams (no title) A.O.D has me interested as to who he/she was and what unit he/she was with. The medal has no bars.

Thank you in advance

Should it be one or four clasps? - by: almcd

This is my first time in posting. Usually I do like to return my genealogy knowledge on forums rather than just taking, but I admit I am limited when it comes to that of the Boer War.
I kindly ask if someone can solve a headache I have with regards to a QSA medal my great grandfather is wearing in a photo when he was a Constable in the Met Police, taken in 1909.
His name is William Robert Powell. DOB 12th Sept 1877. Private No. 4544 of the 19th Hussars.
On his Recruitment Form B.265, it shows within the Military History Sheet that he was awarded QSA with one clasp being DoL. WO100/119 page 39 confirms this with no mention of his name in the supplementary roll.
However the only photo I have of him shows him wearing his QSA with four clasps?
Am I missing something here as I assume his military record would have been inspected before he was recruited by the Met Police?

Duncan Macleod - by: dmurray

Can anyone help me find out if my grandfather's brother (Duncan Macleod DOB 6 Nov 1879) was in the South African Constabulary? I know very little about my granduncle after he left the 31/140 Imperial Yoemanry after the Boer War. I have his discharge papers and he gave the address of the Cape Police when he was discharged in Beaufort West in 1902. His special skill on the discharge form was policeman. He also served in WW1 but I do not have any information other than his military service as he did not communicate with the family after he left for South Africa. If he was in the south african Police where can I get information?

- Queens South Africa Medal to Lieut. J.G. Thomas, Queenstown D.M.T.

Not a bad haul for a Friday

Trent Surname - by: Bean

Of all the Trent's who fought during the Anglo Boer War I have managed to confirm that all are my family in South Africa barring two.
1)
Trent A
No: 4566
Rank: Private
Notes: QSA (5) Source; QSA Medal Rolls
Unit: 1st (Royal) Dragoons.
2)
Trent James Dudley
No: 4578
Rank: Trooper
Notes: Nominal roll in WO127
Unit: SAMIF

The 1st one most likely is not related (maybe way back) but the 2nd one could possibly be. If anyone can assist with more information with them. It would be much appreciated.

Awhile back I saw that my great uncles medals were up for sale. Whether they were actually bought by someone is unknown to me. At the time I was not sure if this was indeed my great uncle. I have since discovered all my South African Trent relatives and mentioned this to them. They are very interested in recovering this medal and any others that may have been part of the sale package. i.e Cape Copper Company Medal for the Defence of O'okiep, bronze. FYI. his full names were John Charles Townsend Trent. The Townsend comes in as we are related to the Townsend family of Namaqualand. His grandfather being Edward Charles Townsend the brother of William Webster Townsend who was commissioned as a captain in the Namaqualand Town Guard. There is quite a nice biography on the Townsend's in City-Coins Medal 67.

Medals to the Transkei Mounted Rifles - by: djb

A very desirable QSA from the next DNW auction

QSA (2) RoM OFS (114 Pte. A. D. Venables. Transkei M.R.)

The description is limited to 'A. D. Venables served with the Transkei Mounted Rifles during the Boer War. '

A look at the rolls shows that Arthur D Venables earned the RoM Clasp from service in the Kimberley Volunteer Regiment (WO100/255p202 refers).

The TMR roll (WO100/277p148) only lists the OFS clasp and provides no link to his other service.

He also served in Brabant's Horse as 301 Trooper.

IHL mitigated for 'work in connection with the plague' - by: djb

I have reached the Ws in the Brabant's Horse attestation papers and came across this document for Trooper Wiblin/Webline whose sentence of imprisonment with hard labour for being drunk and refusing to obey orders was commuted by 3 months because of his work during a plague outbreak around June 1901.

I haven't see one of these before.

Lt. Col. Harry Sparks - by: mike rowan

I quote from the South African Military Who's Who :-
Sparks, Henry 'Harry' ( Springfield nr. Durban 3.3.1854-Durban 2.7.43 ) He was educated in Pietermaritzburg and was involved in the Griqua Rebellion when his family was taken prisoner. In 1876 he joined the Durban Mounted Rifles and fought in the 1879 Zulu War and the 1880 Transvaal War. He married Martha Garbutt and had two sons and two daughters. In 1982 he joined the Victioria Mounted Rifles and commanded the regiment from 1886-7 when it merged with the Natal Mounted Rifles. In 1897 he began the movement to restrict the immigration of Indians to Natal. During the SA War Captain Sparks served with the Natal Mounted Rifles. He saw action at Elandslaagte and the Siege of Ladysmith including the battle of Wagon Hill. Sparks then fought at Laings Nek and the Tvl and OFS. He was appointed CO of his regiment in 1904 and led them in the Bambata Rebellion of 1906. He retired in Sep. 1906 and became head of the pioneer cold storage firm, Sparks and Young "
His medals comprise 1) Colonial Volunteer Decoration - Lt. Col. NMR
2) SAGS ( 1879) Tpr Sparks Dn. Md Rifles
3) QSA ( Elands/Dol/Tvl/OFS.LN ) Captain , NMR
4) KSA - renamed
5) Natal ( 1906) Lt. Col, Natal Mtd Rifles
6) Vol LS ( Vic) Captain, NMR
I wasnt too happy about the renamed KSA but had a suspicion ( hope !) that he hadn't been entitled but put it up anyway. Rory very kindly sent me the relevant medal rolls which seemed to confirm my suspicion. An Officers Roll dated 10 June 1903 indicated the issue of a KSA but a subsequent roll dated October 1906 was a bit more thorough . This latter roll showed that he was only entitled to the SA1901 clasp. From the dates on this roll it seems that it was only finalised early in 1908. By this time he was out of the NMR and had probably been wearing the renamed KSA for 5 years. I have encountered many such instances of groups to Natal units with renamed KSAs and can only assume that there was a tacit agreement not to call anyone out for wearing it. I guess that they all felt that they were entitled no matter what the authorities said.
