Good day

I received my great great grandfathers Vorm B recently. He said that he participated in battles at Moodies (Spelled as "Modies Barberton" on his Vorm B ) in Barberton and Schurwekop. Can anyone please tell me if there were any battles/ Skirmishes at these locations during the war?

My great great grandfather fought for the Carolina Commando, Ward III from 4 October 1899 to 2 June 1902 .

Good Morning Everyone......

I was doing some house cleaning yesterday and found a number of things that I had put away and forgotten.....

Here is one item...... A Ribbon Chart made with samples of ribbons...... I think it is of WW1 period because you can see where what looks like a set of full and half wings have been removed, not by me, and some of the WW1 ribbons......

Yes I noticed the KSA, also I have seen the QSA/KSA ribbon where they have been woven together and have a sample length of it.....

The one I have not seen before is the DCM/QSA/KSA woven together, there would not be much use for that one.......

I have a family heirloom sword that we think an ancestor brought back from South Africa to the UK it has an inscription on it f2 82 8H 19 ... I think that's the 19th hussars but any way that I can confirm it and whose it was. We think Robert Jones or maybe Abraham Phillips

Hello from South Africa
For a couple of years, we have been helping a man to put together the story of one young man who died in Delville Wood.
He has just finished putting together his site and I thought members might be interested to have a look at this.
There are some interesting photos of the young man’s journey until his death in Delville Wood.
There is also a list of the NCOs and men of B Coy, 2nd Regt South African Infantry.

Service Medal of the Order of St John - first award on 6 Jan 1900? - by: djb

The Service Medal is awarded for a number of years of service, 12 or 10 and can be awarded for conspicuous service.

It was announced in the St John Ambulance Brigade General Regulations for 1895, paragraph 11:

By command of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, Grand Prior of the Order, the Council of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England intimate that Her Majesty has been graciously pleased to authorise the issue of Service Medals to reward Distinguished Services and to encourage efficiency and long service in the various Departments of the Order.

Members of the Brigade who have performed distinguished services, or have served honourably and efficiently for a period of not less than fifteen consecutive years, will be eligible for this medal.

It was minted in 1899. According to a snippet of research I have, the first presentation of these Medals was by the Prince of Wales at Marlborough on 6 January 1900.

This from The Times, 9 Jan 1900.

How do I find out which medals my Grandpapa got in the Boer War? - by: HeatherMc

Hi, I am finding it very difficult to find which regiment my Grandpapa Donald McLean, was in, during the Boer War, I don't know if he was maybe a volunteer at the time. He was born 20/10/1880 in Glasgow, and was Acting Corporal in WW1 where he had died. I would love to find out which medals he may have got for the Boer War but I am going round in circles trying to find an easy way to find the information about him. Can anyone help? Ive found about 3 possibles, but without knowing their date of birth, Ive no way of knowing if its him or not :(

I have just been lucky enough to purchase a QSA to 4055 PTE G. Barrett of the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regt who was made a POW at Nicholson's Nek on the 30th of October 1899. He had only arrived in South Africa on the 25 th of September and spent the next 10 days in cells for being drunk on duty only returning to duty on the 5th of October.
The medal has the clasps Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal .
After this experience he spent from Dec 1900 until the end of March 1902 on St Helena guarding Boer POW's before returning to South Africa with the 2nd battalion and qualifying for the South Africa 1902 clasp-not with medal.

Leinster Regiment Grave Markers - by: Stephen_C

Hi all,

I'm currently finishing some work for publication and have a number of Leinster Regiment soldier's who died in South Africa, from research I have, many of these soldiers are recorded as have grave markers such as iron crosses or stone markers.

I would be very anxious to get images of these if at all possible. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions where to go or perhaps someone has these already recorded. I have the exact details of each man and where he is buried - so please get in touch if you think you can help.

Regards,

Stephen
