Alfred William Ducat - a recent acquisition - by: Rory

I have acquired what I think must be at least an unusual if not a rare combination of medals to Alfred William Ducat.

The medals are an:

- 1877/78 SAGS to Trooper A.W. Ducass (sic) Cape Mounted Rifles - served No. 9 Troop
- 1879 SAGS to Lieutenant A. Ducat, Natal Native Contingent - served 2nd Battalion
- QSA to 13 Tpr. A.W. Ducat, Alexandria D.M.T.

Ducat was a Cadet later promoted to Ensign/Lieutenant and Captain in the 104th Foot (Bengal Light Infantry) who took his pension and moved to the Eastern Cape in South Africa where he fought in the Kafir Wars with the CMR and then with the NNC in the Zulu War.

Appointed a Lieutenant in Bakers Horse on 21st Feb 1879, he probably would have come up to join the unit with commandant Baker and the bulk of the unit post Hlobane/Khambula. He then joined 2 NNC on 17th June 1879 and would have served the last month or so of the War in this unit. The 2 NNC and Baker's Horse were in the same column at this time.

It always amazes me how so many Colonials were seemingly quite content to drop down to the rank of Private having served as Officers in previous wars/campaigns.

Research is underway :)

Rory

2nd Battalion, the Buffs - by: Abryher

Thank you for accepting me to the forum.

I am writing a piece on my great uncle, Albert Halke. He was one of the first group from 'K' company of 1st Battalion Volunteer Battalion, the Buffs to sign up to fight in the Boer War, as part of the 1st Active Service Volunteer Company under the command of Captain G Gosling. He sailed from Southampton in the Gascon on 17 Feb 1900 arriving in Cape Town on 11 Mar 1900. He died in Bloemfontein on 12 July of enteric fever. I have a lot of information on everything leading up to 11 Mar. I also know where he is buried and have photographs of the memorials he is on.

But I know little of what happened to him between his arrival in Cape Town and his death only:
His company arrived in Bloomfontein on 12 Apr and joined the 2nd battalion of the Buffs
On 13 June his company was camped at Kroonstad with the 2nd battalion, presumably on garrison duty.

If anyone can help me fill in this gap between 11 Mar and 12 July I would be very grateful.
Also for any photographs of his unit at any time.

Hi All - my name is Fort Rixon and I am young artist who grew up in what seems post everything exciting. Went to school out bush, studied in the queen's city and worked in the Cape Of Storms.

Currently Living between London, Cape Town & Bulawayo mostly.

I'm very interested in Africana, particularly around Anglo-Boer War, Zulu Wars and Rhodesiana.

Creative goal is to make epic historical films about the lesser shared stories of this part of the world.

Currently researching a short film/radio project I'd like to produce around Farm Burnings and really looking to research as many stories as possible around this and outside of my own book collection.

Keen to talk to anyone who has any information/knowledge surrounding the following areas:

- Rimingtons Guides (especially around Farm Burnings in Frankfort & Kroonstat)
- Jameson Raid effect
- Soldiers from Rhodesia, Australia & New Zealand
- Sarah Raal
- Boers who fought for Zulu's and vice versa at any stage (particularly those who painted their faces black)

- Lastly would like to (if anyone was interested at all) to (audio) interview anyone with any direct connections to the anglo-boer war by virtue of relation/ancestors/relatives whatever you'd like to call it.

Also would anyone be able to tell me - There was an L Phillips wrote a book about Rimington's Guides (With Rimington); does anyone know where he was born or lived prior to the war? I know he came from UK but wasn't certain if he was of scottish or english descent.

Here is a film talking about my creative practice - vimeo.com/163614858

Looking forward to meeting and talking to you all!

Best,
Fort Rixon

Hi

This photograph was found amongst my Wife's uncle's belongings we are fairly sure of the Surname but unsure which person is the family member. If anybody can identify the uniform it may help to identify the person.

It has been suggested that it could be a Police uniform but I am spreading the web far and wide to help solve this mystery. Can anybody suggest where else to search if it is not recognised.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hutchie

SOURCE: samilitaryhistory.org/vol017ng.html
Kritzinger had no peace in the Southern Free State and with his horses in poor condition he retreated to Ladybrand. At Rouxville he met General Smuts(14) who was on his way to the Cape. Smuts was able to get a full report on the situation there from Kritzinger. After resting his men and horses for some time and waiting for spring, Kritzinger followed. He re-entered the Cape by crossing the Orange River during the night of 11th December, 1901. Kritzinger was fortunate in finding a sandbar over which it was possible for his 101-man commando to cross the river in safety. Before crossing the river he attacked about 100 men of Lovat's Scouts who were sleeping in their camp at Quaggafontain. Kritzinger was then hotly pursued by Thorneycroft (of Spioenkop fame) but the latter was unable to catch him.

The commando went to Colesberg but on the first night there, was attacked. Thanks to Kritzinger's able command, all his men escaped safely. The British were now more alert. Moving northwards he was pursued by the 5th Lancers who gave Kritzinger's men and horses no respite. In this rough terrain the animals were subjected to appalling demands and at the end of an exhausting day, 130 horses were abandoned by the Commando somewhere in the Hanover district.

The pursuers came on relentlessly and on 16th December, 1901, the 150-man commando was cornered on the Naauwpoort/De Aar railway line at Fransmanskop near Hanover where a line of blockhouses had been erected. The men had to cross the railway line in broad daylight, Fieldcornet J. Fraser and a number of men raced ahead to cut the fence(15) on Kritzinger's orders and the commando stormed through under a hail of bullets from the blockhouses. When an armoured train arrived on the scene the men were several thousand yards away safely behind a hill.

During this hectic breakthrough the Boers experienced one of their worst moments in the Cape. Assistant Commandant-General Kritzinger was wounded and taken prisoner by Lieutenant-Colonel Beauchamp Doran. Relating the incident, Kritzinger said: "I was waiting at the railway line for all the burghers, apart from about 10 of them whose horses had failed them, to cross. Then I followed the commando. But when I turned around for one more look, I saw one of my men hobbling across the line on foot. I immediately went to his aid, and was again the target of the enemy fire from which we had just escaped. While I rode back, one of my officers - Fraser - who saw me turn around, offered his services. He did not want me to be subject to the enemy fire again, and insisted that I rejoin the commando immediately. He would attend to the struggling man. I accepted his friendly offer, but just as I turned my horse to ride back, I felt a sudden shock.

"In a flash a bullet tore through the muscles of my left arm, and passed through my lungs, just missing the heart. It happened so suddenly that for a few seconds I did not realize that I had been wounded. I stayed in the saddle until a few burghers came to my aid. They lifted me from the horse carefully, wrapped a blanket around me and carried me to a place of safety. At first I was determined to accompany my commando to a spot where I could recover in safety, but I soon became aware of the seriousness of the wound, and realised that without proper nursing it would become infected, possibly at the cost of my life. My men also thought it impossible for me to stay with them, and decided to send me to a British hospital for medical care."

Commandant Louis Wessels took over the command of Kritzinger's commando and carried on with the job of harassing the British.

Kritzinger was taken to Naauwpoort by ambulance where he later recovered. Afterwards he was imprisoned at Graaff Reinet with Gideon Scheepers where he, like Scheepers, would undoubtedly have been sentenced to death. However, Advocate F.H.G. Gardiner who later became Judge President of the Cape, ably defended Kritzinger who was acquitted on all the charges brought against him.
