Medals to the Mount Currie Reserves - by: djb

Mount Currie is located in East Griqualand, in eastern Cape Colony.

There were several units operating in this area:

Griqualand Light Horse. WO100/247p23
East Griqualand Mounted Rifles. WO100/247p24 - 37
East Griqualand Mounted Volunteers. WO100/247p38 - 56, 73, 75, 78,
East Griqualand Field Force. WO100/247p57 - 58, 62, 74, 76 - 77, 79 - 81 (some of these pages may refer to the Native Contingent)
Mount Currie Reserves. WO100/247p59 - 61
Matatiele European Reserve. WO100/247p63 - 65
Matatiele Native Contingent. WO100/247p66 - 72

From the roll pages for the Mount Currie Reserves, AG2/M/15427, 37 medals were issued to the unit on 11 September 1905. Taking into account returns, I believe the nett issue to be 22 medals. The CC clasp is listed for men on the first two pages of the roll but, in keeping with other units in the East Griqualand Field Force, no clasp QSAs were issued.

Not surprisingly, the medals are scarce on the market. The only one I seen was from Spink in July 2019, QSA (1) Cape Colony (Tpr: W. Simpson. Mt: Currie Res:). He was issued with his medal 25 April 1911. It is not clear how he earned his Cape Colony clasp and it may well be a later addition as the lugs at to the top of the clasp show signs of prior use as they are larger than unused lugs.
