John Chesney was born in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, on 21 June 1879 and joined the Royal Navy on 13 October 1900. He joined HMS Rattler on 14 February 1901, and served in her during the Boer War. Advanced Leading Carpenter’s Crew on 14 June 1903, he was shore discharged, time expired, on 21 December 1912.
