Mess/Billy Holder - by: Yorkshire Dragoon

Hello all.
I recently acquired a pair of leather containers from e-bay, they were described as WW1 and one was marked as belonging to Sergeant Farrier H W Ceaton (this is why I bought them)
I have been told recently that they are to hold a billy can and cup and have been shown how they would look together. However I was hoping someone would have some idea of how they were attached, I presume, to the saddle?

I have also had a search for H W Ceaton and the only Farrier Sergeant so far served with ' E ' Squadron Cape Colonial Forces. as a relative novice to Boer War history and units any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached pictures of the item, not great i confess but the quality of the camera is not great.
