The Pioneer, a South Wales' socialist newspaper, reported on 15th August 1914 -

We received the following letter from Mr. Chas. Wilson, a teacher at the Dowlais R.C. School, who went to Paris for a holiday before the outbreak of hostilities.......
"A Hungarian staying at my hotel found himself in an awkward position. He had lived 21 years in England, and had fought for the British throughout the Boer War; but as he had no papers and spoke English with a German accent, he despaired of obtaining a passport. 'I have done more for the British Empire than most here,' he exclaimed brokenly to me, 'but I shall be treated as a German and sent to the frontier.' But by chance he met an officer under whom he had served, and who vouched for the truth of his statement, and it was a very happy man who emerged from the Consulate waving a passport and shouting, 'I am recognised as a British subject.' "

Does anyone know of a man with a Hungarian-sounding surname fighting against the Boers?
